Two year twist

So I decided to just twist my hair today. I was just too lazy to wash it.. I'm thinking about dying my roots auburn again. Today I just did a regular twist with JML firm wax and water.

I would spray the lock with some water to make it easier to twist then take to firm wax (just a little bit) and twist it then put it in a ponytail. Putting it in a ponytail helps to tighten the twist and hold it in place.. when I was done with my whole head I ran a blow dryer through the ponytail so that the water can dry off. I don't like the water to stay in because mildew can trap and give it a weird smell. So I always make sure I blow dry my hair and also not to spray too much water on each lock. Maybe one or two spritz is enough.. once I'm sure its dry I wrap it in a silk scarf and let it set for a few hours or overnight. When its done my locks are tight and ready to style..

As u can see from my pictures my parts aren't aligned.. but honestly I don't care.. my hair isn't perfect but neither am I. and besides perfection is boring and far too orginary. If my parts were straight they wouldn't be different from anyone elses hair.

Idk how I'm gonna style my hair tomorrow... Idk whether to put it in a bun, a high pony tail or to just keep it down.

We will see..

Yay for Sock Buns and crinkles

Dear loc blog,

I haven't blogged in a minute. For that I appologize. I've been so busy with work these past few months that I hardly focused on my hair too much. My hair matured around the perfect time too because these days I wash my hair only once a month..  Bad loc maintenance I know... But once I get in the rhythm of things again, then ill focus on my hair.

But on the flipside I have tried two need things when styling my hair that I've never succeeded in either of my last sets.. Crinkles (or braid outs) and sock buns. Ill start with the crinkles.

When I tried crinkles in my other journeys I failed miserably. Simply due to lack of patience.. I would wash then braid my locks. Leave them over night to dry then the next day take them down only to find that, not only were they still a lil wet (obviously), but they weren't crinkled. This time around, I washed, added some mousse, twisted them and braided them one by one tightly, then I put the braids in a nice lil updo, and let them dry for a few days. While my hair was looking good in the updo, it dried completely. A week later I took the braids out and had nice tight crinkles. Oh I just loved them. They lasted for two weeks straight! :D I will definitely do this again.

Now the sock bun is something more recent. I've always wanted to put my hair up in a nice sock bun because I've always thought they were cute. But my hair was never long enough. My hair now is shoulder length. I looked up on youtube how to do it. It was troublesome at first because my hair wanted to do its own thing but it gave in eventually. I want to get some hair pins with the pearl balls on them to make it look cute but I just settled for my rhinestone hair pin in the front for cuteness :).

When I find other styles I will write.. :)

Dye hair! DYE! the aftermath

Dear lock blog

Okay so its been a little more than three weeks. And I'm loving my babies more than u can ever imagine. At this point I don't think I will ever cut them :). But then again who knows wat the future has in store :).

Since the dying I haven't washed my hair. I just basically twisted them these days and left them to their own devices. I mainly had my hair up in a ponytails and shell for the entire time. Just so I won't mess with them.

These days I only use a spray bottle of water, JML firm wax, and a scrunchie to twist and set my hair. My locks are up to the point where they need little maintenance. Just washing, twisting and styling. I guess its because they are mature. I have no frizzlies now. (Thank the lord). I can basically just wash and leave them alone. Total freedom! And if I need to do a little touch up twisting just water (in a spray bottle), firm wax and a scrunchie will do. The hair color adds to the excitement!

These days all I've been doing is watching them grow. When u dye your hair, its easy to see your hair grow. The natural color of my hair is growing back in. I love it! I will probably dye it again in another month just for kicks :).

Plus I did a nice style for my hair. I tried doing a bun but my hair wasn't long enough. But its long enough for a ponytail where I don't need pins for the back. Plus I added a little gold hair clip to the style to make it look even cuter.  I'm amazed at how neat they look these days.

Since my hair has reached maturity I'm guessing the only posts I'm going to do are going to be the different styles I make with my locks. Hopefully I find better products and trincets for my locks. If I do, I will definitely post!

Dye hair! DYE! Part two (long over due)

Dear lock blog

Oh my gosh! It completely slipped my mind to write a part two. I'm so embarrased! I thought I already written one! I feel so terrible. Thank the lord I saved my pictures from the whole experience :)

Okay so the last time I wrote it was before I dyed my locks. I went out and bought SoftSheen Carson Permanent Hair Dye color 374 which is a rich auburn color. Its a lighter shade of brown. I bought 3 or 4 boxes.

The whole process was a little overwhelming. The mixing process was good but applying it to my hair was another story.

My hair (even without locks) is naturally thick so it took a while to apply it all. I had to do two at a time working from my roots to my tips. I had to make sure that each lock had enough dye so that the color could take effect. That took about 30 to 45 minutes alone. I let the dye set for an hour (30 minutes more than I was suppose to) simply cuz I really wanted it to set in. I kept myself occupied with other things in the waiting time. Then I washed it out and got this nice color that I just love. There was only two problems.

First off I think I put a little too much on my roots because they we're a little brighter than the rest of my locks.

Secondly, the tips of my locks were a little bright but not much. That's because I died my hair bronze when I put in this set. It was a surpise but not really a problem.

When I was done I simply dryed my hair then twisted it to set. They came out great. My hair needed some spice.

My locks today??? Just read the next post and you will see :)

Dye Hair! DYE! Part 1

Dear loc blog
I've been feeling depressed lately. So much has been going on with family and my relationship that I've paid little attention to my locks. My poor babies!
After feeling down in the dumps I decided that I should get up and try something new. I got up and got my nails wrapped. That was new because my nails were never long enough to get wrapped. I tried a new design for them with brighter colors to brighten my mood. A hot pink color did the trick.
Then I decided to dye my hair. In my first set I dyed it a rich auburn color. Its a nice shade of brown that not to dark not too bright. I really liked it so I want to dye it again. it goes nicely with my complexion. I'm not the kind of girl that puts all these crazy colors in my hair. Some ppl can pull it off but not all (myself included).
So this is part 1 of this saga lols. As u already know when I started this set I dyed my hair bronze so that when it grows out id be able to tell. Its been a year five months and ten days since I've dyed it last. My hair has grown tremendously. Its shoulder length right now. The tips of my locks are still bronze while the roots to the be beginning of my dyed tips are my natural hair color: off black.
As u can see from my pictures my hair is dry and has little luster. I'm lucky my hair has grown long enough to get into a ponytail because it would make it so much easy to dye each lock individually without the others getting in the way.
Now let's see what happens.. stay tuned! :D

Drying my Dreadies... UGH!!

Dear blog,

In my last blog I had pictures of my hair up. Today I took it down and washed my locks. Throughout this journey I never had a problem with washing and twisting my hair. I didn't have a problem with the timing it took for my hair to lock up because it didn't take long. Naturally I have kinky, nappy hair. Which worked out to my benefit because it only took 8-9months for it to lock. Those aspects I didn't have a problem with. This made my experience easy.

thus far I've only had two issues with this journey. The frizzies (which I mentioned a few blogs ago) and drying my locks. This is a new issue with this journey which I didn't have a problem with in my other journey.

Before I started going natural, I've always had problems drying my hair. Even when I was getting relaxers, I would be in the salon under the dryer for more than an hour and a half just drying my hair. Naturally my hair is really thick and nappy. When I was little combs could hardly get through it.

In my intitial journey I didn't have a problem with drying because it never took long for it to dry up completely. I had one of those dryers that you sit under. Lols I had my own lil salon in my house. And the dryer worked so well that I can wash twist and dry my hair in under 3hrs. 4hrs max.

Somewhere along the line my dryer broke :( and I had to use a regular dryer. Which was jus as effective. Sometimes alil faster.

This time was no such case which is why I'm finding it so hard. This set I didn't go from relaxers to dreads like my first set. And this set I don't have the drying tools for my hair. So most of the time my hair air dries and it takes forever! It sucks!!!

Then sometimes it has a foul smell if I leave it that way for too long... It doesn't smell moldy but it just doesn't smell good.. I can't describe it..

Today I washed my locks with a new shampoo.. Suave Naturals. I like it alot.!! I got it on sale at Target for $1.67 (sweet deal!). It leaves a strong fresh scent that I just love!

When I was done washing it I wringed out most of the water in the shower. It really got rid of all the gunk on my scalp. Then I blow dried my hair which got rid of most of the water.

Right now its not damp but then its not dry. It doesn't have a smell which is a good thing. ima blow dry it some more a lil later.. then I'm going to twist it.

I'm thinking about keeping my hair down these next few days. My hair has gotten a little longer these past few weeks.. yay!!! I want to curl my hair soon but I'm going to wait until after I dye my hair. In two weeks I'm thinking about dying my hair to a rich auburn color. I had that color in my hair in my first set and I really loved it. And plus I'm going to by some more trincets for my hair. I saw some nice ones at this beauty supply store around my house..

Ima post soon!

15 months yay!!!

Dear blog...

Can't believe its been 15 months.. I'm so loving my locks right now in more ways than one..

Last night I washed my hair as I normally do. And for the first time I've noticed that my hair is long. Its officially at shoulder length. It has grown sooooo much since last year!!!!! When I started this set, I dyed my hair bronze so that way when it grows out, I can be able to measure how long it is... Now my hair looks back wit bronze tips.. I plan on dying my hair auburn probably next month. We will see.

Okay here's an update. My frizzies have gone away. I don't know when cuz I haven't done much maintenance these past few weeks. Maybe its because I had my hair up in a style and ponytails. Now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure that's why..

My hair has gotten a lil heavier... But that's ok. I also noticed that my locks are uneven in length. its like a nightmare all over again cuz I delt with this in my first set and that's why I cut them... But its okay cuz this time around I refuse to. This time around my hair isn't too uneven to where I can't style it. My patience has really developed so ill wait until it grows out and then cut it even. Chances are ill forget over time but if I do remember then ill do it. I also noticed that the more developed my hair becomes, the longer it takes to dry. Not good at all cuz I hate hair dryers and I tend to let my hair air dry. I tried looking on the internet to see what I can use and tips to dry my hair faster. I came across this forum and some girl was talking about how she used this SHAMWOW cloth to dry her locks.. I've seen the infomercials about it.. I think its made from chanoir or something (think I spelled it wrong sorry). That kind of material is known for sucking up a lot of water. Ima try it.. I'm tired of air drying my hair... After a while it begins to smell funny.. But what helped me this time around is...
1. I squeezed most of the water after I washed it (as much water as I could)
2. I let it air dry for a few hours...
3. I blow dried it until it was completely dried..
4. Proceed to twist and style as normal.

My scalp hasn't been itchy lately.. Thank god! Maybe its because I'm drinking more water and getting vitamins in my diet. Need to oil my scalp more often. And lately I've been going to the gym. All of this helped my hair grow.

My hair doesn't require a lot of maintainence now. Only washing and twisting and some oiling every now and then. Thank god! I can wash my hair as little or often as I want now.
Can't wait till my hair reaches 2yrs... Can't wait to see how long it will be. We will see!

14 Months and 4 Days Strong :)

Dear lock blog

I promised my friend Momo that i would write an update so i decided to do it before i procrastinate like i always do. its been two months since my last update.. wow where did all the time go? my locks are 14 months and 4 days old. and the experience has been overwhelming thus far. ive had three lock journeys in april 2008. it seems like everytime i cut my locks off i would automatically begin to miss them. thats why this set has been so successful.

Part of the reason why i love going natural is because of the freedom that comes along with it. i like waking up every day and not having to worry about my hair. i love to say that i dont put any harsh chemicals in my hair. I dont have to do much to make my hair grow. with the stress that comes with everyday living the last thing i want to worry about is my hair. even when it rains i dont have to worry about my locks too much. maintenance isnt time consuming or expensive and i can be creative with my hair whenever i feel like it. there are so many things i like about this experience.

what makes this journey even more special to me is that this set was started by me. i like being able to say that i didnt need to go to a salon to maintain my locks. guess that goes to show how easy it was lols. but enough with reflections.

in my last post i complained that my locks were a little bit frizzy. but since then i havent been doing to much to get rid of the frizzies because ive been so busy. lately they have subsided. in my bored moments i would take some of the loose hairs and wrap them around the lock. that seemed to help. other than that i havent done much to get rid of them. ive come to realize that regardless of what i do to tame it, my hair is gonna do what it wants. in time it comes around. my hair is overdue for a wash and twist. maybe ill hold off on the washing and just twist it. either way is fine with me lols. pictures coming up :)
